Located about an hour and a half from the hotel, Dillon reservoir is an excellent choice for a day long getaway. The lake is surrounded by 3 towns – Dillon (marina with watercraft rental and boat tours, paved bike path and a great restaurant – The Dam Brewery), Frisco (marina with watercraft rentals, beach – albeit no swimming, a main street of quaint shops, and fun restaurant – The Island Grill), Silverthorne, (which sits below the dam) is known for the Outlets of Silverthorne mall.
It is also worth noting that ten miles south of the lake is the town of Breckenridge, another fun mountain town that has an extra long gondola ride up the mountain that is free! This gondola takes you up to the top where they have an adventure park with alpine slides, a mountain roller coaster, ziplines and more!
Tips: If you have the time, take Loveland Pass over the Great Continental Divide where you can stop at the top and take a picture at 11,990 feet above sea level. On the way back, go through the Continental Divide as you drive through the Eisenhower tunnel (which is the highest vehicle tunnel in the world). As always, if you are traveling in the high country, be sure to bring a light jacket and watch the skies for thunderstorms!
Also, Anytime you go up I-70, it is best to not come back down the mountain on Sunday afternoon unless you like sitting in traffic. Everyone on the front range goes up the hill for the weekend and comes back down on Sunday!
