National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has another trailhead with access to many open space trails. You can go into the building to check out their cool atmospheric exhibits or use the public restroom. It is not very crowded, has a big parking lot and lots of space to mosey around with great views of the city and the mountains.
